Asko|Schönberg will perform contemporary American works.

In the ironic, playful work Cheating, lying, stealing David Lang investigates his worst traits, ‘since composers are always trying to show how noble they are.’ The eventual winner of the 2014 Tromp International Percussion Competition will pull out all the stops in Mackey’s Micro-Concerto. This work was inspired by his fascination with the one-man-band mentality of percussionists. Drums and kitchen utensils are contrasted with a more ‘regular’ quintet. The Storioni Trio will perform Ned Rorem’s Spring Music.

The historian Maarten van Rossem is the foremost Dutch interpreter of American culture. Whether making a road movie or commenting on current political developments, Van Rossem sheds light on the country of unlimited opportunities. This evening praiseworthy and less admirable characteristics of the United States will be highlighted within the framework of the best contemporary American music.
