Bach & beyond

Joseph Puglia (b. 1984), leader of Asko|Schönberg and in high demand as a solo violinist, has been given a wild card this season as soulmate of the Muziekgebouw.

Puglia opens his soulmate series with a swirling musical journey through time: from Bach’s famous Chaconne to the dazzling violin concerto written for him in 2015 by Joey Roukens. Another gem here is Berio’s Sequenza VIII for violin – one of Puglia’s specialties. Puglia shows us that Bach was a major source of inspiration for composers who came after him. For example, Berio refers to Bach’s Chaconne in his Sequenza VIII. Hindemith’s Kammermusik no. 1 is in fact a small-scale concerto, harking back to the baroque concertos of Bach. And there are also good reasons for choosing works by icons such as Kurtág and Gubaidulina, whose music specifically ponders on the inheritance of the great master. At the same time, this concert is a personal reflection on Puglia’s eight years as violinist with Asko|Schönberg.
