Gaudeamus Muziekweek

Opening concert

The Gaudeamus Music Week is an internationally renowned festival for young composers and new music. This opening concert is also the ‘inaugural concert’ of Hertz, the new concert hall in the recently opened TivoliVredenburg music centre.
The programme features two young composers, Benjamin Scheuer and Francisco Castillo, selected by Gaudeamus for its encouragement award and two former winners of the Prize, Unsuk Chin and Sampo Haapamäki.
Cantatrix Sopranica is a dreamy, vocal composition in which Chin flits like a fairy through a musical wonderland. Scheuer’s composition is youthful and charming with its playful and inventive touches (watch out for the rubber piglets!). Castillo compares his work with a cubist painting, in which material is reorganised to reveal a new, distorted form. In 2004 the Finnish composer Haapamäki won the Gaudeamus Prize for Signature. The programme concludes with the première of Ørjan Matre’s Violin concerto, which combines tradition and innovation with a distinctively Norwegian flavour.
In 2012 Asko|Schönberg gave the first performance of Kate Moore’s Days and Nature. She has arranged the piece especially for this late-night concert (11pm), giving the cello a leading role.
