In his Concerto for Prepared Piano and Chamber Orchestra from 1951, the American composer John Cage made increasing efforts to exclude virtuosity and personal expression. Meanwhile he experimented with the tradition of the solo concerto. His free spirit, which opened up unexpected musical vistas, finds resonance with those Dutch composers operating on the borderline between improvised and composed music, such as Guus Janssen and Paul Termos (who died in 2003). Martijn Padding’s recent cello concerto Last Words displays a flair more akin to Vivaldi than Cage.

Live broadcast by Radio 4 (VPRO).
