Made in Scandinavia

This Proms concert is a Scandinavian affair, albeit with an orange tint, as the composer Klas Torstensson has lived and worked in the Netherlands for many years. His work Licks & Brains takes several energetic riffs as its raw material – rattling repeated tones, bouncing major seconds – which gradually develop into a whimsical orchestral phantasmagory. In Vaporised Tivoli the Swede Anders Hillborg conjures up a musical funfair. His rollercoaster ride of carnival tunes and circus jingles evaporates in a mist of microtones, which recondense in Boyl by the Norwegian Rolf Wallin. Wallin drew his inspiration from alchemical texts and brews up iridescent sound combinations from a variety of contrasting musical elements. Representing Finland, Magnus Lindberg makes reference to baroque dance in Corrente, piling up rhythmic ‘loops’ to create a capricious metrical mosaic.
