Ode aan Kurtág

The poetic sound idiom of the Hungarian composer György Kurtág is enchanting in its beauty. Reason enough for Reinbert de Leeuw to take the initiative to record all of his works for ensemble on CD, in close collaboration with the composer. Tonight this box will be presented during a concert dedicated to Kurtág, who celebrated his ninetieth birthday this year.

No less extraordinary is the performance of Kurtág’s Double Concerto opus 27, which is not often performed due to the large number of musicians required. Not only does the work feature two soloists – the pianist Tamara Stefanovich and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras – gradually the instrumentation expands to encompass two string quartets, two wind quintets and two brass quartets, which fan out into the furthest corners of the hall.
Part of the documentary made by Judit Kurtág about her grandfather will be shown during the concert.
