Opera based on Hitchcock

Annelies Van Parys, resident composer at Muziektheater Transparant, composes her first real opera; it has the suspense of a thriller, the sustained tension of a whodunit, a good dose of humour and a refined web of references to Hitchcock’s imagery.

With this work she continues on her artistic course in the field of music theatre, in the wake of her impressive work Een Oresteia. This time she collaborates with the Scottish poet Jen Hadfield, winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, and the Irish director Tom Creed. The Dutch 33⅓ Collective creates the video and set design. The audience is compellingly drawn into the vision of a voyeur who shamelessly invades other people’s lives. Private view confronts us with the ambiguity of watching and being watched — an issue that seems even more relevant these days: Big Brother is watching you, more than ever.

A production by Muziektheater Transparant in co-production with Operadagen Rotterdam, Vlaamse Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Asko|Schönberg, Concertgebouw Brugge, National Opera Bergen and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.
