Entitling a work Tapdance, while leaving out the main character, the tap dancer – only a rebel like Louis Andriessen would indulge in such a device.

The Netherlands’ most renowned composer celebrates his 75th birthday in the Matinee series with this world première. According to Andriessen himself, he drew his inspiration for the work from the charismatic Scottish percussionist Colin Currie, the repertoire for big band and tap dancer from the 1920s and Morton Gould’s nimbly elegant Tap Dance Concerto.Three kindred spirits complete this festive concert: the American minimalists Steve Reich (Eight Lines) and John Adams (Grand Pianola Music), and the 33-year-old Reza Namavar, who treats his former teacher to a new work.
