Residency Club Church, summer 2025

For many in the queer community, the club is a sanctuary for self-discovery, expression, and acceptance. But it’s also a space filled with secrets and shame, especially for those raised in religious environments. Trombonists Sebastiaan Kemner and Andrew Macleod, together with composer and performer Rick van Veldhuizen, dive into the complex relationship between queerness and religion. Set in the atmosphere of a nightclub and layered with music from a thousand years ago, this work breaks down every boundary of genre and style.

During their residency at GRASpunt, the creators of Club Church are developing this concept further—searching for new ways to share their music and ideas. Letting go of the traditional concert format, they draw on club culture, pop performance, installations, storytelling, and multimedia to shape their vision.

Musically, the project features works by Rick van Veldhuizen, Zeynep Oktar, and Trevor Grahl. During the residency, Rick continues to compose and arrange, inspired by pop icons (and queer legends) like Kate Bush and Björk. Meanwhile, Andrew is working on his first-ever composition, based on breath mantras and erotic moans.

What does it feel like to let go with God watching over your shoulder? Club Church—named after Amsterdam’s legendary queer nightclub—is a performance inspired by a place of paradoxes: the sacred and the profane.
