Scherpdenkers: Adriaan Geuze en Huang Ruo

Music, landscape and architecture

Living space, environment, musical space, spatial music; all these concepts are interconnected.

The landscape architect Adriaan Geuze, whose design accomplishments include the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam and Governors Island in New York, and the American-Chinese composer Huang Ruo with his dimensionalism technique both transport the listener to previously unknown spaces. Composer in residence of the Concertgebouw, Ruo has a strong affinity with the landscape architect. He recognises the themes of his own chamber concerto The Lost Garden in Geuze’s Garden of 10,000 Bridges, a bamboo forest through which a ‘dragon’ of red, semicircular bridges weaves its way. Signifying much more than just a physical space, this is a place to meditate and consider our relationship with nature. In his new work Ruo’s music weaves through the hall like a ‘red dragon’. In his hypnotising Light Within Adams evokes images of the Alaskan landscape, while in Cage’s In a Landscape the windswept sounds of the piano invite reflection and contemplation.
