Back to Basics

Andriessen and Riley

The works in this programme are constructed from basic elements. The composer does not indicate which instruments should be used in either work. Nor is there any indication how many times a specific motif is to be repeated.

The musicians decide this themselves during the performance. For instance, Terry Riley’s In C consists of just a single page of notes, however, peforming it may take an hour. Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union is a combination of personal freedom and strict discipline: the rhythm is fixed and is the same for all the players involved. On the other hand, the pitch is only approximately indicated, so each player is challenged to choose which notes to play throughout the entire work
