Robert Zuidam composed his Requiem using fragments of traditional requiem texts. He creates a ravaged landscape that encourages contemplation of death, transience and inner strength. However, the piece is also an ode to life and it celebrates life as a victory over death.

The text of Ligeti’s Lux æterna (1966) is taken from the Latin Mass for the dead. The work gained international renown when the film director Stanley Kubrick used the music for his film 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968. Louise Fresco (a professor at the University of Amsterdam and a member of KNAW) will read an essay that she has written for this occasion.
