visionary work

Follow the news, look outside: the punk philosopher Timothy Morton believes we are living in a time of ‘mass extinction’ – the term ‘climate change’ is far too mild, he thinks. The composer Stefan Prins translates Morton’s analysis into a crushing experience in sound: inhabit_inhibit is a visionary work featuring instruments placed at different points in the performance space, electronics and feedback loops, all of which make tangible what it means to lose control. We have thrown the Earth out of balance and can no longer control the consequences. Is that stress you’re feeling? It should be.

The Belgian composer Stefan Prins is a musical jack-of-all-trades – he holds a PhD from Harvard, is artistic director of the intractable Nadar Ensemble and ‘plays’ the laptop in a band. Multimedia and innovation are constants in his work, in which he invariably saws at the legs of convention. Prins also believes the soporific concert practice of today should be overhauled. Don’t expect a calm introduction to this important contemporary composer – but do expect a gripping one.
