Louis Andriessen 80

Birthday of a great composer

On 6 June 2019 Louis Andriessen will turn 80! What better reason to place this magnificent composer in the limelight? Three compositions sketch his career in a nutshell.

The earliest work of the evening, Hoketus (1976), was created shortly after Andriessen achieved his international breakthrough with De Staat. From the radical, pounding music of Hoketus it is a unique journey to the sensuous soundscape of La Passione (2002).
Andriessen originally wrote the ecstatic Dances in 1991 for a choreography by Bianca van Dillen. Written for soprano and ensemble, Dances transports the listener to the world of paranormal perception – a gift that goes hand-in-hand with fear and dramatic turbulence. In La Passione (2002) for voice, violin and ensemble the violin pursues the voice in a diabolical manner. Andriessen based the work on the claustrophobic universe of the ill-fated Italian poet Dino Campana. The version of La Passione with Drupsteen’s visuals was previously performed at the Acht Brücken Festival. The visuals in Dances and Hoketus are a world première.
