World première of Roukens’ Violin Concerto

As long as people have composed music, both inspiration and imitation have played an important role. Even in the Middle Ages, composers wrote their most beautiful masses to folk melodies, and cross-pollination is still popular in the twenty-first century.

In Restless Feeling, the British composer David Horne links up to the gritty sound world of The Velvet Underground, Steve Reich takes his inspiration for Radio Rewrite from two songs by rock group Radiohead, and in Canzonas Americanas, his compatriot Derek Bermel makes a trip along folk music from North and South America. The Dutchman and born eclectic Joey Roukens effortlessly pairs swinging pop music with crooningly romantic harmonics. His new Violin Concerto was written expressly for Joseph Puglia, and it gives centre stage to his expressive, lyrical style of playing.
