Frank Zappa was one of the most influential and controversial pop musicians of the 20th century. With an aversion to convention and a healthy allergy to petty-mindedness, he broke down the barriers between experimental rock and contemporary music to develop an entirely unique avant-garde sound.

He was not shy of experimentation and, fascinated by composers such as Varèse, Stravinsky and Webern, he discovered his own musical freedom before proceeding to become an icon of American musical history. The colourful Belgian composer Luc Brewaeys also enjoyed experimenting and using unusual instruments. It comes as little surprise, therefore, that he arranged a number of Zappa numbers. Raphael Vanoli and Pete Harden, guitarists in Knalpot and Ensemble Klang respectively and representing a new generation of eclectic composer-musicians, are also writing new work inspired by Zappa, especially for Asko|Schönberg.
