Dag in de Branding: Klaas bij Nacht

In November 2024, Asko|Schönberg premiered Silvia Borzelli’s earthbound for cello and large ensemble at the Cello Biennale in Amsterdam. In this piece, Borzelli experiments with breaking traditional coordination and decoupling between the bow and the left hand. Jasper de Bock’s I walk is a new work for percussion soloist and ten-piece ensemble.

De Vries’ Sub nocte per umbras is a masterpiece featuring “brilliant instrumentation, full of surprising contrasts in color” (Erik Voermans, Het Parool). Opening with a whispering stillness, broken only after minutes by a bold fanfare, the piece unfolds into a breathtaking 30-minute arc of tension.

Silvia Borzelli (1978), originally from Italy, studied in her home country, Sweden, and The Hague. Now based in Amsterdam, she has been shaped by composers such as Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, and Yannis Kyriakides, crafting subtle and intricate sound worlds.

Jasper de Bock (2003) discovered a dusty keyboard in his attic at the age of seven and quickly rose to prominence as one of the most promising composers of his generation. Known for his dramaturgically potent pieces, he has won several awards and is currently studying in The Hague with composer Jan van de Putte, himself a former student of Klaas de Vries.

Asko|Schönberg has a long-standing relationship with Klaas de Vries, premiering several of his significant works. During Dag in de Branding, the ensemble will perform De Vries’ masterful Sub nocte per umbras, dedicated to the Schönberg Ensemble and its founder, Reinbert de Leeuw. This piece is presented alongside works by two composers from younger generations.
