De Fifties I

Volcanic innovative impulse and an unprecedented experimental urge

The fifties saw a new society emerging from the post-war chaos, while music also underwent a radical re-evaluation. During this concert Asko|Schönberg makes a musical tour going back to the Europe of those times, when a volcanic innovative impulse and an unprecedented experimental urge predominated.

They travel from Germany and Flanders, where Stockhausen and Goeyvaerts preached the doctrine of serialism, to France and Italy. Here the young Nono and Maderna provided their own twist to the legacy of Schönberg and his associates, inspired by the master of twelve-tone composition Dallapiccola. Meanwhile, André Jolivet set his own course in France: his Second trumpet concerto is a tumultuous tribute to Varèse-esque blocks of sound and jazz.
