Pulse Shadows

Together with Asko|Schönberg and Katrien Baerts the Doelen Quartet concludes its five-part series with a lyrical hour. Harrison Birtwistle set his Pulse Shadows to melancholic poems by Paul Celan.

He made use of Michael Hamburger’s English translation of Celan’s sublime poems and placed these in an equally elevated musical context. Pulse Shadows consists of nine pieces for string quartet, alternating with nine songs for soprano and ensemble, in which he reflects upon Celan’s highly sensitive inspirational source: wartime suffering.
