For Mutability, composer Yannis Kyriakides invited twelve fellow composers to write miniatures of two to three minutes each. Several of them perform their own music, alongside the musicians of Asko|Schönberg.
“Each piece tells its own story,” says Kyriakides, “a story not expressed through language, but embodied by the performers.”

The music is performed live, yet continuously transformed through a series of algorithms that mutate the pre-recorded images and sounds of the soloists.

In a hallucinatory space designed by Theun Mosk, soloists, visual projections, and electronics converge. The audience is free to move through this ever-changing concert installation, populated by ghostly reflections of the original miniatures. At times, the identity of an instrument can be discerned; at others, it dissolves entirely. Out of these twelve intersecting musical lives emerges an enchanting sound world — one to inhabit for a while, whether for the full six hours of the mutation process or just a part of it.

The Mutability concert installation consists of four parts, which can be experienced either as a whole (with a passe-partout) or separately. Each part lasts 1.5 hours and offers a complete experience in its own right. During the performance, visitors are welcome to enter and leave freely and move about the space. Food and drinks are available at the Muziekgebouw.
