Missy Mazzoli x Steve Reich

Spend an evening in the world of the New York avant-garde of minimal- and post-minimal music.

Minimal music emerged in 1960s New York: music as a process, built on repetition, rhythm, and shifting time. Reich became one of the defining voices of that movement. Reich’s Tehillim is a groundbreaking work that, in contrast to his earlier works such as Music for 18 Musicians, reveals a different side of minimalism.

Minimal music came to Europe. In Amsterdam, the New York minimal pulse was reinvented as harder, more angular, and rhythmic.

That line continues to this day. Mazzoli stands in a later phase of that legacy: post-minimal, the New York avant-garde of today. In Vespers for a New Dark Age, Mazzoli depicts the fragility of modern man in a technological world. Voices, strings, and electronics open up a fragile, unstable space where control constantly tilts.
