The twelfth Stairway to Music takes place deep within a cornfield in Flevoland. Here, the iconic piece ‘Lichtbogen’, composed by the Finnish Kaija Saariaho, resonates. ‘Lichtbogen’ (1986) was the work that launched Saariaho’s career; through electronics and live sound manipulation, she expands the acoustic soundscape of the instruments.

Accompanied by sun and wind, a dance with the light unfolds, prompting the question: are the musicians following the arc the sun traces across the sky, or is it the other way around? In this ‘Stairway’ installment, the musicians of Het Muziek perform the final four minutes of the composition.

‘Stairway to Music’ is an online compilation of work by Het Muziek, featuring gems from our music archive alongside brand-new compositions. It is a musical and cinematic exploration, filmed at unique locations across the Netherlands. Every film features a staircase!
